This time last year…
….I got to hear the most heavenly voice in the world, in the same tiny room as me. I’d be doing a round trip of something like 700 miles (hey, that’s a lot for someone British!) and got scalped buying tickets on ebay at three times the face value but that meant nothing. I was at Monto Water Rats and that night Patrick Stump was on that stage. I was there one year ago today (ok yesterday, but only just) and I have the photo to prove it but seriously, you dont need to see a blurry pic of the backs of lots of heads and Patrick and some other blokes in the distance on here.
This was one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to, ever (and I’m an obsessive Muse fan, seen them a stupid amount of times and they have a reputation for being awesome which is justified) and I enjoyed this gig more than most of those concerts. For me, being in the same place, hearing Patrick sing live was beyond sublime, I’d listened to Truant Wave dozens and dozens of time but nothing vaguely compared to hearing him in person at one of only two gigs he played over here. He looked in his element and the crowd were loving it, it was a faultless evening. Sometimes he looked like the handsomest man ever, then he’d do a derp face and you’d just have to smile as he was so into the music he was beyond that point of thinking ‘do I look cool right now’ which is the way it should be if you’re passionate about what you do like Patrick obviously is.
My only regret was not hanging about to try to meet him which would have happened as he had to go past where I was to actually leave the venue. But I chickened out of that, and of having a chat with Matt Rubano too who was mere inches away from me at one point. What could I say that would be new or interesting anyway I thought and drifted away with the music ringing in my ears, feeling on a happy high.
Besides, he’ll be back, maybe he’ll even come up to my home town if I’m lucky and I even got tickets to see Panic at the Disco in the hope that Patrick would support them overseas as he had done in the States.
But it wasn’t to be. Now he’s given up performing, hung up the bow tie and tux, disappeared from the internet and is thinking of getting a workaday job like the rest of us. I’m a grown woman and it still makes me want to cry damn it! The injustice of some assholes attacking someone humble who was just beginning to blossom and believe in himself makes me so mad. I hope those people who hassled him on the web and at his gigs sit down and reflect on what they have achieved.
Stick your hand up if you’ve a guilty conscience…
If you love Fall Out Boy and post them on your blog, then reblog this.
I WILL follow you. I need some more FOB fans on my dash.
Show or no show?
So did Patrick do a show yesterday or not? Well it looks like he did a few acoustic numbers and had some photos taken with folks who had won some competition or other.
I was getting a bit confused as there’s been no mention of him doing this anywhere other than on that site itself but figured that if it had happened last year he would have looked different (he’s v blonde in the photos which wasn’t the case this time last year- I know as i saw him this time last year…..if only that lay in front of me again but I digress). So seems it must be current then, Mr Stump has been in the building!
As I have an essay to write tomorrow I’ll obviously go and put some of the photos from the site up here instead ha ha!
I wish it could be Patrick’s birthday everyday….
Today’s been a lovely day. There’s been a virtual torrent of love on Patrick’s tumblr. Lots of wonderful pictures of this beautiful, kind and intelligent man. So many messages of thanks for making lives happier, better and more enriched and stories and accounts of how he has contributed to and changed peoples lives. I could read and look at this stuff forever and wish every day that there was this much love and picture spammage of Patrick. If anyone ever deserved all of this it’s him and I like to see the good guys getting the glory they fully deserve, especially after they’ve been in the wars, survived the hard times and come out the other end. More than anything, I’d love to give him the birthday present of whatever it takes to make him believe in himself and his brilliant, life affirming music and that voice which is beyond perfection.
On a less serious note, several thing I love about Mr Patrick Stump:
1 That he uses words like egrarious in interviews amongst other words that send one off in search of a dictionary. Such a profusion of verbosity!
2 His smile in the Spotlight video when the little girl wobbles her tummy. Anyone who does not go ‘awww isn’t he sweet’ needs to be taken out and shot.
3 That he hates barbecue sauce. Too right Stump, it is repulsive and vile.
4 Coming on stage at his live gigs to Giant Steps by John Coltrane. Can’t beat a bit of jazz and Coltrane rocks. Patrick knows this only too well.
5 The way he sang What a Catch Donnie. I wouldn’t be writing this if something inside me hadn’t melted at the beauty of his voice singing that song…
6 Folie a Deux. It kicks the shit out of Take this to your Grave because it has more of the true essence of Stumpness throughout. Listen to him singing the harmonies close to the end of W.A.M.S. Nuff said.
7 Patrick’s ‘Halloween’ outfit of the red suit, devil’s horns and eyeliner (goes off fangirling for an eternity…..). He never looked more beautiful.
8 Performing live like a man possessed but never getting red in the face. That is a superhuman skill worthy of a cape and knickers worn over the tights.
9 Being humble, modest and leaving everyone who has met him or had a message from him feeling so happy from having been treated with such sincerity, honesty and all round niceness. Even more evidence of a giant among men.
10 He likes the Downton Abbey, Prince, curry and sarcasm and is allergic to cats. Technically five things but hey why not, it’s the Stump we’re on about here. I’m with him 100% on all of the above.
Happy Birthday Patrick Stump!
You likely won’t see this but I hope you do;
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
I’d love it if you put ‘patrick stump tumblr’ into Google as you wouldn’t see any haters here, just lots of love and lots of appreciation for your music, what you’ve done through your music for so many people and respect and kindness from all those you’ve touched in some way and there’s a lot of us and plenty more who quietly agree but just don’t do the whole internet bloggy thing.
I for one am delighted you made it past the notorious age of 27 and that you’re on the right side of 25. Have a wonderful day and stay perfect xx
PROJECT STUMPIFY: Do you guys WANT me to cancel Project Stumpify? →
Because nobody has been tweeting Patrick, like, AT ALL. It really makes me sad that you can’t take a minute from your day to tweet Patrick this video that I and a lot of other Soul Punks worked EXTREMELY hard on. The point of doing Project Stumpify was so Patrick can see it and know how much he’s…
More thoughts on Patrick’s sad blog post…
I’ve read it more than once, already wrote my take on it and sent encouraging words to Patrick on here that no doubt he won’t get to see though I hope he does, the guy deserves every word of praise that exists to my mind. That blog post made me feel sad for days, as it would had it been anyone I cared about.
But what upset me the most I think was seeing the effects of negativity on someone who had just come into their own, someone blossoming and developing some long deserved and delayed self belief. I’d listen to Spotlight and often thought there’s an autobiographical message in there; not only do we need to believe we can be the star and shine so bright, but Patrick does too and he was showing that he did think that with his solo career, through his interaction with fans and through his lyrics and music. He was coming into the light instead of being the shy guy who hid behind his hats and more confident bandmate.
I felt so sad for him when he said he felt he was a has been at 27, such a young age to have lost one’s hope. At one time if your first album didn’t ‘do an Adele’ it wasn’t a mark of failure, it was the exception rather than the rule if you were an overnight success. Artists and bands had to keep on trying, perfecting what they do; Patrick’s heroes themselves like Prince and David Bowie were not overnight hits, sometimes it takes the world out there a bit of time to catch up and onto what you are doing, especially when it isn’t the same old bland stuff that the charts is crammed full of and you have a spark of originality and a distincitiveness that makes you more intreguing.
In no way do I think his solo career is ‘misguided’ as he described it. I love Soul Punk and Truant Wave; anything that gives me the chance to hear THAT voice is more than fine with me. It was ‘What a Catch Donnie’ that REALLY cemented my passion for hearing Patrick sing, not FUCT or TTTYG.
Now here comes the point of my musings and ultimately what I’d like to tell the man himself if I ever were to meet him. For me (and lots more of his fans I’m sure) the important thing at the heart of what I love about him as an artist is Patrick himself. He doesn’t need a fantastic backing band or a big stage/club, he doesn’t need the gimmicky bow ties, fingerless gloves (and certainly not the moon boots- I still have the phone number of the fashion police should those boots make another appearance lol) he doesn’t even need to race round the stage like a man possessed, giving the drums a good thumping while he’s at it.
When you have a voice as beautiful, that can touch you emotionally as his does, when you have a personality so likeable, so genuine to the point where you feel they are akin to a friend (and feel their pain too when the bullies strike), when your lyrics are heartfelt, moving and inspiring and when you can play a tune on nigh on whatever instrument is put in your hands and a sincere passion for what you do as Patrick does, yet be so humble about what you do, that alone is more than enough.
Give him only a guitar and a piano, let him turn up to a wee small bar, wearing whatever he had lying around that morning and ask him to sing and play. Beg him if you have to. That is all he needs to do, nothing more, his talent is enough, it can stand up without any props. He needs to be his own Spotlight, believe he can do it and that he has the ability to shine through without needing to hide behind anything.
If you do that Patrick you will make yourself and many many people happy.
